Countertops / Solid surface

Solid surface countertops

Solid surface is a non-porous acrylic or polyester composite. Its defining advantage is seamless joining — including an integrated sink with no rim or joint at all — which makes it particularly strong in bathrooms and anywhere hygiene matters.

Solid surface is often overlooked next to stone, but its seamlessness and repairability make it the right answer more often than people expect, especially in bathrooms.

What is the main advantage of solid surface?

Seamlessness. Sheets are chemically bonded so joints disappear, and a sink can be integrated into the top with no rim or seam. There is no crevice for water or grime, which is why it performs so well on bathroom vanities.

Can scratches in solid surface be repaired?

Yes, and easily. Because the material is consistent through its full thickness rather than surface-printed, scratches and light burns can be sanded out and the finish restored — something no stone surface allows.

What are the limitations?

Heat is the main one. Solid surface is significantly less heat tolerant than natural stone and can scorch or deform under a hot pan. It also lacks the depth of real stone, which matters if the countertop is meant to be a feature.

Frequently asked

Solid surface countertops — your questions answered

Is solid surface the same as quartz?

No. Quartz is mostly ground natural stone with a resin binder and is much harder. Solid surface is a softer acrylic composite that can be sanded and repaired.

Where does solid surface work best?

Bathrooms, integrated sinks, and anywhere a fully seamless run matters more than heat tolerance.

Does it need sealing?

No. It is non-porous and needs no sealing.
