Countertops / Quartz
Quartz countertops
Quartz is an engineered stone made from ground natural quartz bound with resin. It is non-porous, so it never needs sealing and resists staining from everyday spills. For Tampa Bay kitchens it is the lowest-maintenance countertop available, though it needs trivets under hot cookware.
Quartz is the default recommendation for most Florida kitchens because it removes the maintenance variable entirely. There is no sealing schedule to keep and no porosity to worry about around a sink.

Why is quartz good for Florida kitchens?
Because it is non-porous. Florida humidity keeps spills wet for longer, which gives any porous surface more time to absorb them. Quartz cannot absorb moisture at all, so no sealer is needed and stain resistance never degrades with age or cleaning.
What are the downsides of quartz?
Two. Direct heat can scorch or discolour the resin binder, so hot pans need a trivet. And quartz is not UV stable, which rules it out for outdoor kitchens and strongly sunlit runs where a natural stone would be the better choice.
- Use trivets — do not place hot cookware directly on the surface.
- Not suitable for outdoor kitchens or sustained direct sun.
- Seams are easier to disguise than in granite, but not invisible.
- Pattern is consistent, which some people prefer and others find less characterful.
How do you care for a quartz countertop?
Wipe with a soft cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid abrasive powders, bleach and anything strongly alkaline, which can dull the surface over time. No sealing, no re-treatment and no annual maintenance schedule is required.
Frequently asked
Quartz countertops — your questions answered
Does quartz need to be sealed?
No. Quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing, which is its main practical advantage over granite in a humid climate.
Can I put a hot pan on quartz?
No. The resin binder can scorch or discolour. Use a trivet or a board.
Can quartz go outdoors in Florida?
No. The resin degrades under sustained UV. Choose granite or another natural stone for an outdoor kitchen.
